30 Years Supporting Rail Through Occupational Health

Dr Steve Malleson, Chief Medical Officer shares his journey with Express Medicals

In reflecting on Express Medicals’ remarkable 30-year anniversary, I can honestly say that my own journey with the company began in the most unexpected of circumstances — with a sick passenger on a train in 2005.

While travelling to York for a professional meeting, an announcement asked if a doctor was on board. I responded, little realising that this moment would profoundly shape the next two decades of my occupational health career. Among those also attending was Dr Dan Hegarty, then the driving force behind what was at that time a relatively small but highly committed company, Express Medicals.

As we travelled to the same meeting, conversation naturally followed. Having recently begun freelance work, I explained my background and specialist training in railway medicine. That chance encounter soon led to my joining Express Medicals one day a week as their supervisory physician.

What I did not appreciate then was just how significant this opportunity would become. Over the next 20 years, my part-time role with Express Medicals has provided not only a steadfast professional home, but also the flexibility to explore wider areas of occupational health while always returning to the company’s uniquely consistent, reliable, and ethical standards.

Express Medicals has remained defined by professionalism, integrity, and a genuine commitment to delivering the highest standards of occupational health.

I would not, and indeed could not, have remained with any organisation for this length of time without such unwavering support, ethical leadership, and professional consistency. As I approach the later stages of my career, I look back with immense gratitude. Express Medicals has been far more than an employer — it has been a cornerstone of my professional life.

Had I not been nearing retirement, I have no doubt I would gladly remain for another 20 years.
