Celebrating 30 Years in Occupational Health
It is wonderful to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Express Medicals and to reflect upon all that has happened between its initial registration on 12 June 1996 and the company’s growth and maturation since.
The company was a true start-up, born of an idea from a pitch side conversation with a close friend whilst we watched our sons play hockey one Sunday morning. Initially, there were no clients, just one small office, minimal equipment and no formal strategic plan. Rather, there was an optimistic sense of possibilities and a willingness to work hard in trying to turn an idea into a reality.
It is said that “from little acorns grow trees” and this metaphor is true of Express Medicals. In its early years the company focused upon the rail sector, supplying medical assessments for companies working on the Network Rail and London Underground infrastructures, as well as collecting urine samples for subsequent drug & alcohol tests. Our expertise in railway medicine and occupational drug & alcohol testing is well recognised today. Whilst our heritage lies within railway medicine, Express Medicals is now a well-established occupational health company offering a range of professional services across many sectors beyond rail.
Nowadays, as a trusted authority in the safety-critical occupational health space, Express Medicals has developed a highly professional structure. This is underpinned by robust systems, ethical protocols, accreditations, strategic business plans and IT infrastructure - everything expected of a dynamic business meeting the evolving needs of the sectors it serves.
The company is, and always has been, focused upon people – fellow team members, the employees of both clients and suppliers, advisors, mentors and trainers (etc.). People are fundamental to the our story and all have influenced us in myriad ways, whether profoundly or fleetingly. The company culture has evolved to be one that is genuinely safe, inclusive, friendly, empathic and supportive. There is a feeling of community at Express Medicals and this is reflected in a variety of ways, not least in the number of longstanding team members. This culture of community is something to cherish.
Rightfully acknowledging the contributions of previous team members, I fully realise that the paramount reason that Express Medicals is so well-placed for ongoing success today is a direct consequence of the strong work ethic, enthusiasm for delivering service, professionalism and knowledge & experience of the whole current team. I also extend this recognition to our regular advisors, mentors and trainers.
From my own perspective, I am immensely thankful for the wonderful experience of being part of Express Medicals’ story from the very beginning and proud to remain part of it today as the Executive Chairman.
Express Medicals is a service company with community at its heart. That community works well together, successfully delivering excellent services to all our clients. This is something to be admired and for the whole team to take satisfaction in.
