Saliva POCT Drug Testing FAQs
Why is the panel changing?
We have selected a new saliva POCT device that offers a more efficient testing process and aligns with the substances included within the Network Rail drug testing panel. We believe this provides customers with a robust and industry-recognised screening panel.
Is this the same testing process?
Yes. Candidates will still provide a saliva sample using a point-of-collection testing device. The collection process remains familiar and straightforward.
Is this the same test used by Network Rail?
No. Network Rail has its own approved testing protocols which mandates urine testing. However, the substances screened for within the new saliva POCT panel align with those included within the Network Rail testing panel.
Is the new panel less comprehensive because it tests for nine substances instead of ten?
No. The reduction in the number of drug groups should not be viewed as a reduction in testing quality. The panel has been revised to align with a recognised industry-standard screening profile and includes drug groups considered highly relevant to workplace testing programmes.
Which substances have been removed?
The following substances are no longer included within the new saliva POCT panel:
Buprenorphine
Synthetic Cannabinoids
Methamphetamines
Which substances have been added?
The following substances are included in the new panel:
Tramadol
MDMA (part of Methamphetamines group)
What are the benefits of the new device?
The new device provides:
Faster testing
Improved efficiency for on-site testing
Simplified administration
Quicker interpretation of results
Reduced disruption to workplace operations
Will this affect the accuracy of testing?
No. The change relates to the composition of the testing panel and the device used. The objective remains to provide reliable workplace drug screening through a recognised saliva POCT process.
Will there be any changes to pricing?
No. There are currently no planned pricing changes as a result of this transition.
Will turnaround times change?
No. There are no changes to the expected reporting or service delivery times.
Which panel will be used after the implementation date?
Routine saliva POCT tests conducted on or after 25th September 2026 will utilise the new 9-drug panel.
Any 10-panel saliva POCT tests booked before the implementation date for a future appointment will be honoured and completed using the existing 10-drug panel.
The exception is our For Cause Out of Hours POCT service, which will continue to use the existing 10-drug panel until stock has been exhausted.
How can I confirm which panel was used for a specific test?
The testing panel used will be reflected in the associated price lists and within the booking confirmation. If you require confirmation regarding a specific test, please contact our team at doaresults@expressmedicals.co.uk.
Do I need to amend my drug and alcohol policy?
Most customers will not need to make any changes. However, if your policy specifically references individual substances, a 10-drug panel, or particular screening requirements, we recommend reviewing the policy and discussing your requirements with Express Medicals.
We require testing for one of the removed substances. What are our options?
If your organisation specifically requires screening for Buprenorphine, Synthetic Cannabinoids, Methamphetamines or any other drug group not included within the new saliva POCT panel, please contact us. We can discuss alternative testing solutions that may be more appropriate for your requirements.
